Program Description:

The Early Childhood Education/Educational Assistant Program is designed to train graduates to provide quality services for young children and their families.  It is developed to comply with the National Guidelines for Training in Early Childhood Care and Education.  The program is also designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to assist classroom teachers in inclusive educational settings.  The program combines theory and practical applications for elementary and secondary age students in the K-12 school system.

*Students can choose to take both Early Childhood Education and Educational Assistant courses or they may take only the courses pertaining to either Early Childhood Education or Educational Assistant.  Tuition is the same.  Students who select both programs broaden their employment opportunities.

Career Opportunities:

Early childhood educators/ educational assistants will plan, organize, and implement programs for children between the ages of infancy and 12 years. They support students and assist teachers and counsellors with teaching and non-instructional tasks. They assist in areas of personal care, teaching, and behavior management under the supervision of teachers or other childcare professionals. Early childhood educator assistants provide care for infants and preschool- to school-age children under the guidance of early childhood educators. Early childhood educators and assistants lead children in activities to stimulate and develop their intellectual, physical, and emotional growth and ensure their security and well-being.

They are employed in child-care centers, day-care centers, kindergartens, agencies for exceptional children and other settings where early childhood education services are provided. Supervisors of early childhood educators and assistants are included in this unit group.

Job opportunities for Early childhood educators and assistants (NOC 4214) are fair in New Brunswick over the next 3 years. This job outlook is also applicable to people working as an early childhood education worker.

Salary Expectations:

$28,808 - $65,000per annum.

Students must meet one (1) of the following admission requirements:

  • High school graduation or
  • GED or equivalent or
  • Mature student – Detailed resume outlining experience and qualifications must be submitted.
