Personal Support Worker
A Personal Support Worker (PSW) is a Canadian health worker that provides care to those that are not fully able to care for themselves. This includes seniors, individuals with physical disabilities, and individuals with mental disabilities, amongst others. The Personal Support Worker program is a comprehensive program of study that prepares graduates to provide services to people who need help with their daily needs. Students in this program will build a group of skill sets that will allow for effective interaction with both individuals and groups in facility-based or community-based settings. The knowledge attained in this program will allow graduates to work with a team of professionals to improve a person's quality of life.
Some of the responsibilities and duties of a PSW include, but are not limited to:
- Observing and reporting clinical and treatment information, behavioural changes
- Assisting with range of motion exercises, and other rehabilitative measures
- Taking and recording blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration, bodyweight, and height
- Assisting with ambulating and mobilization of patient
- Collecting specimens for required medical tests
- Providing emotional and support services to care-receivers and families
- Assisting with personal hygiene
- Assisting with meal preparation, grocery shopping, dietary planning, and food and fluid intake
