Policing and Security Foundations

The Policing & Security Foundations program is designed to emphasize the necessary competencies required, both academically and physically, to be successful in the law enforcement and/or professional security fields in Canada.

Admission Requirements

  • Successful completion of High School Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Those applying as a mature student must be at least 28 years of age – Must provide a detailed resume outlining experience and qualifications.
  • Medical Clearance to participate in vigorous fitness program/testing
  • Criminal Records Clearance Check: No criminal record for which a Pardon has not been granted
  • Minimum 18 years of age; Provincial Licensing requirement 19 years old
  • 3 Letters of Reference: non-family members
  • *CPR & First Aid Training- Must be completed prior to graduation from ABC

COMPUTER COURSES

Keyboarding
This program is designed to assist students in mastering the alphabet and numeric keyboard, speed and accuracy, and formatting of letters and memos.

Microsoft Office Suite
Instruction is offered in computer functions, terminology and structure.  Current software packages such as, WordPerfect for Windows and Microsoft Word are used.  Students also become familiar and comfortable with spreadsheets, databases, presentations and communications using Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook.

COMMUNITY POLICING COURSES

Criminal Justice- Introduction to Political Science 3045
This course will provide students with the opportunity to acquire the necessary knowledge in order to perform the various occupations within the law enforcement industry in Canada.  As a member of Canadian society it is equally as important to members to acquire an in depth knowledge of Government at the Federal, Provincial and Municipal levels.

Introduction to Psychology 3045
This course will provide students with the opportunity to acquire the necessary skills, knowledge and confidence to have an increased understanding of the scientific study of the human mind and character as they relate to the law enforcement industries.

Fitness & Lifestyle Management 3040
The course will assist students  in developing a healthy and fit lifestyle and provide an opportunity to increase one’s personal and work related fitness.  Students will be provided the tools and methods to successfully meet the demanding physical fitness standards imposed on law enforcement officers.

Ethical Issues in Law Enforcement 3045
In this course, students will be exposed to and explore the areas of exercising their authority as an officer and the responsibilities of the position both on and off duty.

Community Policing 3040
This course will provide students with a “New Age” approach to serving the community which takes students back to the style of policing conducted utilizing traditional methods and procedures.  This course will expand on the total aspect of modern day policing styles in North America outlining the collaborative style of policing methodologies.

Police Power and Procedures 3090
This course will provide students with the skills, knowledge and confidence to apply the basic concepts of arrest and detention under the authority of the Criminal Code of Canada and the Supreme Court of Canada case law rulings.  The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is instrumental in the development of the powers of the police officer and these rights and freedoms will be explored in depth.

Criminal Investigations 3080
Developing investigative theories, format, structure and logical sequences pertaining to the investigation of simple and moderately complex investigations, is the focus of this course.

Crime Scene-Forensics 3045
In this course, students will be given the opportunity to acquire the skills, knowledge and confidence to apply the principles and responsibilities of the first officer on the scene of a criminal investigation.  Students will be exposed to a comprehensive presentation of identification, collection and the preservation of evidence and participate in competency based role playing scenarios.

Law & Security Administration 3040
This course is a foundation course into the field of Private Policing which is the entry level of all law enforcement officers.  Students will be exposed to the history; legislative requirements along with a basic and advanced level of security procedures, technology and equipment in order to jump start a career in this exciting industry.

Private Investigation 3090
This course provides students with the knowledge and skill sets in order to gain an understanding of the competencies required of professional private investigators including, memory and observation; processes of investigation; powers of a private investigator; and, specialized forms of investigation.

Sociology Deviance & Crime in Canada
This course provides students with the information needed to understand deviance, crime and control as social creations and their causes and those creations are deeply imbedded in the social, moral, economic and political fabric of Canadian society.  This course examines Canadians views on deviance and focuses on sociological frameworks that explain and provide solutions to social deviance and criminality.

Communications 3040
This course will assist students with being able to articulate both in writing and orally on a professional level.  In the field of law enforcement, persons with these competencies are the most successful and resourceful employees in any organization.

Investigative Interviewing 3025
Students will acquire the necessary tools to conduct interviews with professionalism and integrity at all times.  Topics covered include basic principles; the personal approach; giving interview a structure; planning and preparation; engage and explain and, closure.

Arrest & Control, Core Values, Fitness 3200
This course will provide students with the opportunity to acquire the skills, knowledge and confidence to apply the principles of less lethal force practices and procedures.  You will work within the parameters of the National Use of Force Framework and demonstrate competence in the application of self-defence techniques and officer safety guidelines.  Students will participate in a Para Military structure training program involving drill, deportment and learn to display the cultural values of the law enforcement industry.  A considerable amount of time and effort will be devoted to organized fitness classes in order to achieve the rigid fitness standards required of recruits in law enforcement today.

SPECIALITY COURSES

CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear) 1st Office on Scene 3015
The course will explain in detail how emergency response personnel recognize, and respond to, but not intervene in a potential chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear incident.

Accident Investigation 3045
In this course students will learn how to undertake the basic investigative steps at the scene of a non fatal motor vehicle accident.  Accident Investigation requires attention to detail and a basic understanding of mathematics.

Emergency Vehicle Operations Theory 3015
This course will provide students with the opportunity to acquire the skills, knowledge and confidence to enhance their defensive driving skills in non-emergency situations.  This course offers the most current software available for defensive driving simulation allowing students to practice in 28 different environments and scenarios.

Non Restricted Firearms Course 3040
Students will become familiar and safely handle non restricted firearms and comply with the statutory requirements regarding licensing, handling and storage.

Policing Firearms Training
The restrictive firearms course is designed to provide students with the basic principles of law enforcement pistol competencies and knowledge of Tactical Shooting Principles.

Atlantic Business College is the only college to utilize the latest Airsoft Law Enforcement Pistol Simulation Technology which was developed by police expert and Chief Instructor, Keith McCuaig.

Part 2 of the training will place students in an interactive video scenario based training component whereby they will have to draw on their knowledge and abilities in responding to threats, and violence, choosing the appropriate level of response which may include the use of force, including deadly force, (pistol shooting).
