The Paralegal/Legal Assistant program is designed to provide students with the skills required to work in a variety of legal settings.  Emphasis is placed on developing expertise, understanding, and preparation of legal documents. Students will benefit from field trips to various facilities where Paralegals and Legal Assistants would need to use their skills on an every-day basis.

Admission Requirements:

  • Successful completion of High School Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Those applying as a mature student must be at least 28 years of age – Must provide a detailed resume outlining experience and qualifications.

In addition to the Common Core courses required to complete the program, the following are specific courses pertaining to the Paralegal/Legal Assistant program.

Legal Office Procedures 3225
This program is designed to give students a general overview of the Canadian legal system, with particular attention to legal documents and legal office procedures.  Emphasis is placed on creating client files, billing and a variety of documents prepared to NB Standards.  Document preparation includes general, family law, civil litigation, real estate, estate and corporate law.

Legal Transcription 2045
This course is designed to give students a solid understanding of machine transcription.  Emphasis is placed on mastering the dictaphone equipment, punctuation, accuracy and proofreading of transcribed documents.

Legal Research 3090
Legal research, according to one source, is "the process of identifying and retrieving information necessary to support legal decision-making. In its broadest sense, legal research includes each step of a course of action that begins with an analysis of the facts of a problem and concludes with the application and communication of the results of the investigation."  This course is designed to give students a working knowledge of legal research and legal citation, including primary and secondary research, sources, real property searches, electronic search tools, legal writing, and legal memoranda. Students are assigned a research project during the course and are required to prepare a legal memo for review.

Law 3090
This course is an introduction to law for paralegal students.  The Canadian legal system, court structure, terminology, definitions, and spelling of pertinent legal terms are the focus of this course.

Microsoft Word 2090
This course will provide students with the opportunity to acquire the skills, knowledge and confidence to utilize Advanced Microsoft Office Word’s interface.  You will learn to create, edit text, and revise documents.  You will have the ability to create and manage professional documents.
