Dental/Medical Administrative Assistant

The Dental/Medical Administrative Assistant program is designed to provide students with the business, technology, and communication skills needed to work in a professional dental environment, private physician’s office, clinic or hospital setting.  Emphasis is placed on dental and medical terminology, dental and medical office procedures, charting, body systems and transcription.

Admission Requirements

  • Successful completion of High School Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Those applying as a mature student must be at least 28 years of age – Must provide a detailed   resume outlining experience and qualifications.

In addition to the Common Core courses required to complete the program, the following are specific courses pertaining to the Dental/Medical Administrative Assistant program.

Advanced Microsoft Word 2090
This course will provide students with the opportunity to acquire the skills, knowledge and confidence to utilize Advanced Microsoft Office Word’s interface.  Students will learn to create and edit text and revise documents.  They will have the ability to create and manage professional documents using mail merge, macros, graphics, advanced tables, formulas, breaks, tabs, forms and subdocuments.

Advanced Microsoft Access 2045
Students will learn to maintain a relational database.  They will have the ability to modify, add, and delete data through the use of forms and reports in design view.  Students will learn to sort, filter, and advance query data to create forms and reports.

Document Transcription 2045
This course deals with the transcription of various documents.  The first part of the course deals with the transcription of documents which may be found in a general office.  These include letters, memos, outlines, reports, minutes, etc.  The dental and medical portion of this course focuses on the transcription of medical and dental documents including letters, memos, radiology reports, consultation reports, operative reports, discharge summaries, etc.

Dental Office Procedures 3090
Optimum dental health care is dependent on a number of factors.  These factors include the competence, commitment, and collaboration of team members.  Effective management of the dental practice is integral to the success of the practice.  In addition to the management of business records in the office it is imperative that all records, dental, medical, and personal – pertaining to each client be maintained accurately, completely, and current.

Dental Terminology & Records 3045
The patient’s record contains vital information pertinent to the patient’s treatment.  Complete accurate documentation is of utmost importance in this legal document.  This course will cover the significance of patient records, restorative charting skills and periodontal charting skills.

Medical Office Procedures 3090
This course will look at the responsibilities of a Medical Administrative Assistant; scheduling appointments, the management of patient records including filing and organization of information. Various formats for medical reports, keeping accurate financial records, maintenance of medical office supplies, and dealing with telephone courtesy.

Medical Terminology 3135
This course will provide students with the opportunity to acquire the skills, knowledge and confidence to read, spell, pronounce and understand medical terminology.

CPR and First Aid Training
