Keyboarding
This course is designed to assist students in using basic keyboarding skills, developing speed and accuracy, formatting memos and letters, and introducing word processing skills.

Students will learn how to use the Microsoft Office 2003 Suite of productivity software. Emphasis will be placed on Microsoft Word (word processing, document creation), Microsoft Excel (spreadsheet creation), Microsoft PowerPoint (presentation layout and design), Microsoft Access (database design and use), and Microsoft Outlook (email and time management).

This course provides students with a general overview of the Canadian legal system with emphasis on speed and accuracy in producing legal documents, and knowledge of procedures used in a legal office. Areas of study include civil law, estate law, family law, real estate, and corporate law.

Legal Transcription
Students develop the skills and knowledge necessary to accurately transcribe a variety of legal reports, correspondence, and communications from audio tapes. Students incorporate their knowledge of terminology, abbreviations, and punctuation and grammar. Emphasis is placed on development of transcription speed and proofreading skills.

Legal Research
Legal research, according to one source, is "the process of identifying and retrieving information necessary to support legal decision-making. In its broadest sense, legal research includes each step of a course of action that begins with an analysis of the facts of a problem and concludes with the application and communication of the results of the investigation." This course is designed to give students a working knowledge of legal research and legal citation, including primary and secondary research, sources, real property searches, electronic search tools, legal writing, and legal memoranda. Students are assigned a research project during the course and are required to prepare a legal memo for review.

This course focuses on Canadian Law and covers such topics as the Introduction to the Legal System, Canadian Constitution, Tort Law, Contract Law, Corporate Law, and Real Property.

Advanced Microsoft Word
Once the foundations of Microsoft Word are taught, students will apply these skills to create documents such as newsletters, tables, forms, merged documents, and labels. Students display their advanced skills and creative work in a portfolio.
