Admission Requirements
Admission requirements are for 5 and 10 month programs. Night classes have prerequisites listed in each course outline.
The admissions staff at Atlantic Business College recognizes that everyone has a unique academic history and therefore examines each application on an individual basis.
The application process requires that the student submit an official transcript, the appropriate application form and participate in an interview. The interview should demonstrate that the student has the interest and motivation to succeed in the desired program.
Minimum requirements for acceptance include high school diploma or equivalent.
Mature students, who may not meet the minimum admission requirements, will be considered for admission provided that they can demonstrate an ability to undertake post-secondary studies.
The Spiral Approach
Atlantic Business College uses the proven "spiral approach" to learning. This approach is supported by numerous educational principles such as:
-
Learning is more effective if the character of a good job performance is known
-
Learning is easier if some form of plan of a total subject matter organization is apparent.
-
Learning is more effective when the subject matter is presented as nearly as possible in the setting in which it will eventually be used.
-
Subject matter presentation and practice should be balanced in time and emphasis.
-
Learning is more effective when activity is characterized by variety.
The "spiral approach" is based on the rationale that learning must be interrelated as new learning is added. The student is introduced throughout the program to a constantly expanding field of related knowledge.
Educational research has shown that people do not learn in little boxes. The "modular approach" to learning used in other career colleges is not as effective as learning that takes place when students are provided with interdisciplinary opportunities throughout their program.
The "spiral approach" helps students develop discernment and judgement; helps them to learn to form questions and pose problems that lead to answers and thus provides for intellectual independence. The modular approach serves only to direct students to answers to problems in isolation of the total discipline.

Career Cluster Technique
Atlantic Business College has developed a Career Cluster Technique which focuses on the basic critical skills, attitudes and behaviors required in the careers related to financial and business services, sales and marketing, administrative and clerical support services, and occupations related to the hospitality and tourism industries.
Several groups, including the Conference Board of Canada, parents, students, and businesses have pointed out, that to enter our ever-evolving workplace successfully, education programs must be relevant in their preparation for students. To this end Atlantic Business College has used the Employability Skills Profile of the Conference Board of Canada to design a "cluster" of courses. This "cluster" will provide every student with necessary skills in the areas of communication, teamwork, information technology, finance, personal management, and problem solving. These "workplace readiness" skills, attitudes and behaviors are those demanded by today's employers.
Atlantic Business College builds on the Career Cluster Technique by providing students with the additional opportunity to specialize in a wide variety of occupations in the careers of their choice. The carefully designed "cluster" provides students with maximum flexibility when applying for a wider selection of jobs.
